The Amphitheatre is the main herbaceous planting area in the garden. It is a roughly circular area bounded by part of Shanklin's Path and the road that extends the drive to the Roundel at the bottom which is planted with five Betula ermanii in a circle, surrounding 'Celebration' a sculpture by Estonian ceramicist Tonis Kriisa. Surrounded by a fence and beech hedge to discourage deer and keep out hares and badgers (unfortunately not the bloody pheasants), the area is set out as a quasi-maze in seven unequal beds with bending paths between them with a lawn at the centre planted with a Lebanon Cedar.
